What Is a Superload?

A superload is over-dimensional, like an oversize haul, but a superload exceeds an oversized load in width, height, length, or weight. Superloads can’t be divided or broken down to reduce their size. They are often pieces of extremely heavy and large equipment. For example, cranes, vessels, and structures often merit superload designation.
Different states will define a superload differently. For instance, in Massachusetts, a superload is 130,000 lbs., but in Pennsylvania, cargo that surpasses 201,000 lbs. is considered to be a superload.

Divisible and Non-Divisible Super Loads

Divisible loads are shipments that can be split up into smaller, legal-sized units, like pallets of goods or bulk materials. Because of this, they usually don’t need permits for being too big or too heavy. On the other hand, non-divisible loads are things that can’t be separated without breaking them or taking too long to put them back together, like heavy machinery, bridge beams, or parts for wind turbines. These super loads that can’t be divided need special permits for being too big, too heavy, or too heavy to haul. They also need carefully planned routes and sometimes escort vehicles to make sure they are safe and follow the rules
